Backless bras that stay out of sight

A backless bra is any bra built to disappear under an open back: a band that dips low, no band at all, or one that fastens round your waist. Each type suits a different back and bust.

A backless bra is a bra designed to stay hidden under an open back. There are three main types: low-back bras whose band dips into a U and fastens at the waist, adhesive bras with no band at all, and shapers with built-in cups. Which one works depends on how low your back is cut and how much support you need.

The three types

Low-back (U-plunge) bras. Underwired or moulded cups with a band that drops into a deep U at the back and wraps round your waist. They keep wires and real support, so they suit fuller busts.

Adhesive backless bras. Silicone or fabric cups that stick to your skin and often clip together at the centre. Nothing shows at the back, but they hold best on smaller to mid cups. See our stick-on bra guide.

Backless shapers. Slips or bodysuits with cups and a low-cut back, made for fitted dresses where you also want smoothing.

For a step-by-step choice based on your dress, read the bra for a backless dress guide.

Good, affordable picks on Amazon UK

We chose these for strong reviews from many Amazon UK shoppers and a price below most similar listings when we checked in October 2026. We have not tested them ourselves. Check your size, today’s price and the returns policy before you buy.

How low is the back?

  • Mid back: a low-back bra or a converter strap on your own bra.
  • Lower back or waist: a U-plunge low-back bra or a shaper.
  • Fully open to the waist: adhesive cups or boob tape.

Sizing a backless bra

Low-back bras use your usual UK band and cup size; if you need one, our bra size calculator gives a starting point. The waist band should feel firm but not tight. Adhesive styles are sized by cup letter, so check the maker’s chart and go up if you are between sizes.

Tips for keeping it hidden

  1. Try the bra with the dress in front of a mirror, checking both sides.
  2. Raise your arms and sit down: low bands can creep up.
  3. Choose a shade close to your skin tone for light fabrics.
  4. For adhesive cups, apply to clean skin with no lotion.

Questions people ask

Do backless bras give support?
Low-back bras with underwires and a waist band can support D cups and above. Adhesive styles give less support and suit smaller to mid cups.
What size backless bra should I get?
Buy low-back styles in your usual UK size and adhesive styles by cup letter, using the maker’s chart. Our bra size calculator gives a starting size.
What is the difference between a backless and a strapless bra?
A strapless bra still has a band round your back. A backless bra either has no band or one that drops low enough to hide under an open back.
